Regenerative Dartmoor. Phase 1, Stacking Functions' Funded by Devon Environment Foundation

2019 - For many years I had been baffled. I couldn't understand why more regenerative land management practices were not being deployed on Dartmoor. The region where I grew up, a farming community that I love, a landscape that I have worked in most of my life, how could I stand by and watch it be degraded? 'Stacking Functions' helped get a multidisciplinary, multistakeholder baseline of two catchments on Dartmoor. Kindly funded by the Devon Environment Foundation. Please feel free to get in touch with questions. If you use this data, please be kind enough to credit the work.

Facing the Gulf, Portraits of Oil

In 2010 disaster struck the marine scape of the Gulf of Mexico as the BP oil rig Deep Water Horizon flooded the gulf with oil. Unimaginable damage ensued followed by further devastation with the application of the dispercent chemical Corexit, which fractured the slick and allowed it to sink and smother the sea bed. A new layer of horror. Hundreds of square miles of dead zone, but under the waves so we forgot. Not able to un-see those images, I shaped my exhibition around them 'GULF' By the power of the internet my sculptures attracted attention and documentary maker Nancy Boulicault approached me. We co designed a project, got funding and in 2011 traveled to Grand Isle, the southern most point of the US and deliveered the project to this devastated community. The paintings created were brought back to London and were hung in protest on the railings of our National Portrait Gallery in London, at the time sponsored by BP. Facing the Gulf, Portraits of Oil.
